Food manufacturers across the globe have been relying on X-ray technology to check the foreign matters like steel, stone, glass and ceramic since the early 1990s to protect consumers, reduce the risk of product recalls and safeguard their brands. But what exactly is x-ray inspection and how does Unicomp Food X-Ray work?
This article takes food x-ray inspection back to basics by explaining the main components and operating principles of an X-ray system, the safety of X-Ray system, and the types of foreign materials that can be detected.
In simple terms, Unicomp Food X-ray system uses an x-ray generator to project a beam of low energy x-rays onto a detector. X-ray inspection involves passing a product or pack through the x-ray beam before it reaches the detector. The amount of x-ray energy absorbed during an x-ray beam’s passage through a product is determined by the product’s thickness, density and atomic mass number. When a pack or product passes through the x-ray beam, the beams are absorbed by the pack or product, with only the residual energy reaching the detector. Measurement of the differences in x-ray beam absorption between the product and foreign body is the basis of x-ray inspection.
For the average human, natural background radiation contributes about 2,400 μSv (2.4 mSv) of radiation in a year from natural sources. This typically far exceeds the radiation exposure received from an x-ray inspection system in industry. Unicomp Food X-ray inspection system is <1 μSv (0.001 mSv) per hour. Which means an operator would receive 2,000 μSv (2 mSv) per year when working 50 weeks a year and 40 hours each week in direct contact with an x-ray system.
